The New ‘Game-Changer’ For The Canadian Internet Landscape:
> CO-OP Internet Equity: Your Building-Owned Internet Network!
————————————————————————————————

Definitions

‘Internet equity’ typically refers to the concept of ensuring equal access to the internet and its benefits for all individuals and communities, regardless of factors such as location, income, ethnicity, or physical ability.

‘CO-OP Internet Equity’ is a group-level participation in the ownership of the components of an entire building-based network with which to deliver internet to each of the group’s residents. In such a model of operation, the members can participate in the joint funding of the network, or have it’s ownership conferred upon it by external donations, granting, or corporate sponsorship.

The majority of a building’s internet network resides in building’s own cabling, so when a technical solution adapts it to an ‘independent’ status functionally, the building is said to ‘own’ it’s internet, and thus has ‘internet equity’.

Building-Owned Networks

The technology now exists to isolate the components of an entire network in a building, so as to bring connectivity to all suites without the involvement of the carriers, other than the carrier mainline coming into the building.

How can this be done?

A Unique 1st-of-a-kind Arrangement:

The CO-OP Internet Equity program has come about through the society’s ongoing arrangements with the ISP/providers to forgo the typical on-going monthly residuals in favour of providing the new infrastructure for the residents to keep using, towards an ownership position for the building sponsors.

Consisting of;

Once installed, the building has it’s ‘own internet network’, and only need to pay for the relatively small monthly ongoing carrier wholesale mainline charge. (In most cases a few hundred dollars per month for the entire building)

FAQs
Once the new service is re-distributed through ‘leveraging’ the building’s existing network assets the building has control over it’s own network. This is now ‘fed’ a new ‘dedicated’ wholesale carrier mainline to the building.
Thus, the building has everything it needs to get hi-quality and hi-speed internet without generating the typical in-suite service charges.
The carrier equipment would be replaced by a new in-suite wireless router connected to the new service into the building.
It would be set up by one of our technical allies to perform the very quick & easy set-up/installation, and there is no set up fee or payment for this under the Giving program.

The building owner/sponsor is committed to paying the monthly carrier wholesale line. It may seek contribution from the residents to cover this. This is very minor and may amount to a few dollars per month from each resident.
The service is better due to ‘unshared’ nature of the lines coming into the building.
Carrier lines to buildings are often ‘shared’ (many times before coming to your suite & building)
Whereas dedicated lines means they are unshared and brought in JUST for your building.

No. The CO-OP internet is going to be ‘future-proof’ in that it is provisioned to allow upwards of 2.5-10Gpbs speeds through the network, far exceeding the needs of any of the residents. The network can work with incoming coaxial cable or dedicated fibre.
